Onduidelijke tentamenvraag

  Onlangs kreeg ik bij een tentamen de volgende vraag:

  'Write an essay where you compare and contrast the article by X and the article by Y. Your essay should be in two parts:

  a) – Deze doet er nu niet echt toe —

  b) Compare and contrast the approach to change the arguments are based on.'

  De b-vraag was voor mij erg onduidelijk en naar mijn idee niet correct. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar jullie interpretatie van deze vraag! Ook hoor ik graag wat er naar jullie idee mis mee is.

  Compare and contrast the approach to change the arguments are based on. De zin loopt niet goed en ik snap ook niet wat ze bedoelen.' Arguments' heeft duidelijk in dit geval voor ‘are’(meervoud) gezorgd. Volgens mij foutief, want ‘the approach’ is het onderwerp.

  compare and contrast——–the arguments(mv) —————'are'(mv) based on the approach to change.

  compare and contrast——- the approach (ev)——on which the change ‘is’(ev) based

  Wat is in deze zin the subject?

  Ik denk dat het moest zijn ‘the arguments the approaches to change are based on’. Maar dat blijkt niet echt zo logisch uit de vraagstelling.

  Op zich loopt de zin wel, hoewel mij niet duidelijk is over welke argumenten meen spreekt. Zijn ze soms onderdeel van vraag a) of bedoelt men de “argumenten” die je zelf gebruikt om de twee artikel te vergelijken?

  In ieder geval loopt de zin wel goed. Het gaat om “the approach to change” en “the arguments are based on”.

  Ik heb een ander fout gezien. Een zin moet je niet eindigen met “on”. Het zou moeten heten: Compare and contrast the approach to change on which the arguments are based.
